Lucasfilm’s watch list on StarWars.com has 28 screen titles, 13 films and 15 series, from Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977 to The Mandalorian and Grogu in 2026. We read it, and every title’s own Disney+ page in the US and in the UK, on Oct. 23, 2026.

Disney+ is the one place to stream nearly all of it. On that day 27 of the 28 titles had their own Disney+ page in both countries, with the same running time on each side of the Atlantic. The exception is the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars: StarWars.com shows a Disney+ button on its page, but we could not find the film on Disney+ in either country, so the table marks it not confirmed. The Clone Wars series from the same year is there in full.

There are two ways through. Release order is how audiences first met the story and keeps every surprise where it was meant to land. Story order follows the galaxy’s own calendar, and StarWars.com publishes one, which we give below with its notes.

The list leaves out Star Wars: Visions, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures and the LEGO Star Wars specials, which StarWars.com files separately from its two orders.

The short answer

First time: start with Star Wars: A New Hope and watch the six Skywalker films from 1977 to 2005 in release order. Everything else hangs off those.

Rewatching: use StarWars.com’s story order below, which starts a century before the Empire with The Acolyte and puts the series in between the films.

Short of time: our cut list below keeps the nine numbered Skywalker films, with three extras if you want more.

Release order, era by era

The original trilogy, 1977 to 1983

  1. Star Wars: A New Hope (Episode IV), 1977. George Lucas directed the film that started it all, with Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. Start here whatever order you choose later.
  2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V), 1980. Irvin Kershner took over as director, and Luke goes to Dagobah to train with Yoda. It builds directly on the first film, so in our view it is never one to skip.
  3. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Episode VI), 1983. Richard Marquand directed the close of the first trilogy, with Billy Dee Williams back from The Empire Strikes Back.

The prequel trilogy, 1999 to 2005

  1. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (Episode I), 1999. Lucas went back to the beginning, with Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor leading the cast and the young Anakin Skywalker found on Tatooine. We would watch it after the originals, as release order does.
  2. Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (Episode II), 2002. Set ten years after the first prequel, with Hayden Christensen joining the cast. The galaxy is on the brink of civil war, and in our view it is the film to have fresh in mind before The Clone Wars.
  3. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (Episode III), 2005. Lucas’s third prequel, and the hinge between the two trilogies. Several later series are set in the years just after it.

Animation and the sequel trilogy, 2008 to 2019

  1. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (film), 2008. A 1h 40m animated film in which Anakin and his new Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, take on a rescue mission for the crime lord Jabba the Hutt, with Count Dooku and Asajj Ventress against them. In our view it is safe to skip if you go straight to the series.
  2. Star Wars: The Clone Wars (series), 2008. Seven seasons, from 2008 to 2020, created by George Lucas, with a voice cast led by Matt Lanter and Ashley Eckstein. Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Underworld and Maul all draw on its characters, so in our view it is the series that makes the later animation make sense.
  6. Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VIII), 2017. Rian Johnson directed the middle of the sequel trilogy, picking up the heroes of The Force Awakens. At 2h 34m it is the longest film on the list.
  7. Solo: A Star Wars Story, 2018. Ron Howard directed this story of how Han Solo meets Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian, with Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover and Emilia Clarke. Enjoyable, and in our view safe to skip on a first pass.
  8. Star Wars Resistance, 2018. Two animated seasons about the pilot Kazuda Xiono, sent by Poe Dameron to spy on the First Order with BB-8. In our view it is lighter in tone than the rest, and safe to skip.
  9. The Mandalorian, 2019. Jon Favreau’s live-action series, three seasons from 2019 to 2023, with Pedro Pascal as the bounty hunter Din Djarin and his foundling, Grogu, after the fall of the Empire. The 2026 film carries their story on.
  10. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX), 2019. Abrams returned to close the nine-film Skywalker saga.

The Disney+ era, 2021 to 2026

  1. The Book of Boba Fett, 2021. One season with Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen, about Boba Fett making a new start on Tatooine with Fennec Shand. Created by Favreau, and best watched after The Mandalorian, in our view.
  2. Star Wars: The Bad Batch, 2021. Three animated seasons, from 2021 to 2024, about a squad called the Batch and Omega, set under the Empire. StarWars.com puts it after Revenge of the Sith, Tales of the Empire and Tales of the Underworld.
  3. Obi-Wan Kenobi, 2022. One season set during the reign of the Empire, with Ewan McGregor, who is in all three prequel films. Revenge of the Sith is the one film to have seen first.
  4. Andor, 2022. Tony Gilroy’s two seasons, from 2022 to 2025, following Cassian Andor toward the rebellion, with Diego Luna. In our view it needs no other series to follow, which makes it a good start for an adult newcomer who has seen the films.
  5. Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi, 2022. Six animated episodes about two Jedi from the prequel years, Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. Our pick for a break between longer series.
  6. Ahsoka, 2023. Dave Filoni’s live-action series with Rosario Dawson as the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano. A second season is dated for Jan. 20, 2027. Ahsoka’s earlier story is in The Clone Wars, so that is the one to watch first.
  7. Star Wars: Tales of the Empire, 2024. Six animated episodes following Morgan Elsbeth and the former Jedi Barriss Offee, in different eras.
  8. The Acolyte, 2024. Leslye Headland’s one season with Amandla Stenberg, set a century before the rise of the Empire, when the Jedi Order and the Republic have known centuries of peace. The earliest point in the timeline, and in our view it stands on its own.
  9. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, 2024. One season from Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, with Jude Law, about four young characters lost in the galaxy, searching for their home planet. StarWars.com places it after Ahsoka in its timeline; in our view it needs none of the other shows.
  10. Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, 2025. Six animated episodes about two villains, Asajj Ventress and the outlaw Cad Bane. Ventress is also in the 2008 Clone Wars film.
  11. Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, 2026. Animation set after The Clone Wars, as Maul tries to rebuild his crime syndicate, with a voice cast led by Sam Witwer. Watch The Clone Wars first.
  12. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, 2026. Favreau’s film with Pedro Pascal, Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver, which played in theaters and now streams on Disney+. Have The Mandalorian behind you before you start.

If you are short on time

Our pick, for a first watch, in this order:

  1. Star Wars: A New Hope. The foundation.
  2. The Empire Strikes Back. The middle chapter most of what follows depends on.
  3. Return of the Jedi. Closes the first story.
  4. The Phantom Menace. Brings in the young Anakin and Obi-Wan as an apprentice Jedi.
  5. Attack of the Clones. Starts the war.
  6. Revenge of the Sith. Joins the two trilogies.
  7. The Force Awakens. Hands the story to a new generation.
  8. The Last Jedi. The sequel trilogy’s middle film.
  9. The Rise of Skywalker. Ends the saga.

Three extras if you want more: Rogue One, because it leads directly into A New Hope; Andor, for the strongest live-action series without homework; and The Mandalorian, because the 2026 film carries its story on.

The 2008 Clone Wars film is marked not confirmed because neither country’s Disney+ Star Wars page listed it on Oct. 23, and we found no Disney+ page of its own. We will add it if that changes.

Our other watch-order guides are on the Guides page, including the Marvel films and series and the James Bond films.
