Netflix announced on Oct. 21 that cameras are rolling on The Whisper of Fire, a limited series in four parts that adapts Spanish author Javier Castillo’s book of that name.

Inma Cuesta leads the cast. Netflix names four more leads: Alejandro García, Iván Pellicer, Zoe Bonafonte and Alicia Armenteros. Guillermo Bedward, Nico Romero and Jaime Zataraín are among the supporting actors.

The directors are Laura Alvea and José Ortuño, working from a script by Jesús Mesas Silva and Javier Andrés Roig. Atípica Producciones is the production company, and Alberto Félez and Cristina Sutherland are its executive producers.

What the series is about

Per Netflix’s summary, Laura, a young astrophysicist, is found in Tenerife’s Teide National Park. Two people start separate inquiries into that night: her twin brother Mario, who has spent a year fighting cancer, and Civil Guard Sergeant Candela Oramas.

Suma de Letras, an imprint of Penguin Random House Grupo Editorial, publishes the book. Netflix counts this as its fourth adaptation of a Castillo book, following The Snow Girl, The Soul Game and The Crystal Cuckoo.

Where and when

Netflix says filming takes place at various locations in Tenerife and Madrid. The announcement is worded as global and lists no country restrictions, but it gives no release date, release window or episode run times. We have not guessed one for either the US or the UK.

The where-to-watch box lists Netflix for both countries, with no date. We will add the date when Netflix announces it.

The production company’s record

In its notes on the producer, Netflix puts Atípica’s total at 180-plus Spanish awards and 77 from abroad. Two of its earlier projects, The Snow Girl and The Crystal Cuckoo, were also Castillo adaptations. Its film credits include Marshland and Cousinhood. The award counts are Netflix’s description of its partner, and we have not checked them against the awarding bodies.
