Netflix said on Oct. 22 that the Korean series Tantara premieres Friday, Dec. 11, and released a date announcement poster with the news.

The series stars Song Hye-kyo and Gong Yoo, with Kim Seol-hyun and Cha Seung-won in the cast. Noh Hee-gyoung wrote it. Netflix credits her with Our Blues and It’s Okay, That’s Love. Lee Yoon-jung directs, and Netflix lists The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince among her earlier work.

What the series is about

Netflix describes Tantara as set in the Korean entertainment industry from the 1960s to the 1980s. It follows people who started with very little and worked toward success in music.

According to Netflix, Song Hye-kyo plays Min-ja, who enters the music business after a childhood in poverty during which she took any job she could. Gong Yoo plays Dong-gu, her childhood friend, who works beside her to protect her dreams. Kim Seol-hyun plays Min-hui, a singer who becomes their first artist. Cha Seung-won plays Seok Gil-yeo, described as the era’s top hitmaker, who can turn rookies into stars.

The poster

The poster is built around a turntable. Netflix says it shows the characters’ lives from Min-ja and Dong-gu’s start as nightclub staff to their work as talent managers. It also shows Min-hui singing next to Seok Gil-yeo on the saxophone.

Where to watch Tantara

Netflix says the series is available “only on Netflix” and gives Dec. 11 as the date without splitting it by country. The page is tagged global, so the where-to-watch box shows the same date for the United States and the United Kingdom. We will correct it if Netflix gives a different UK date. The announcement does not say how many episodes there are, whether they arrive together or weekly, or what time the series goes live.

What happens next

The next step is the premiere on Friday, Dec. 11. The announcement includes no trailer.
